2024 A YEAR OF CLADDING FIRES IN REVIEW
In 2024, the persistent issue of flammable cladding on buildings remained a significant safety concern, with several notable incidents underscoring the ongoing risks.
Valencia Residential Complex Fire
On February 22, 2024, a devastating fire erupted in a high-rise residential complex in Valencia, Spain. The blaze, which began on the eighth floor, rapidly consumed the building’s façade, resulting in ten fatalities and at least 15 injuries. Investigations revealed that the rapid spread was due to the use of aluminium composite panels with a polyethylene core—materials known for their flammability. This incident drew parallels to the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire in London, highlighting that critical safety lessons had yet to be fully implemented.
Dagenham Spectrum Building Fire
In the early hours of August 26, 2024, a fire broke out in the Spectrum Building, a seven-story block of flats in Dagenham, East London. The building was known to have “non-compliant” cladding pending removal. Swift action by the London Fire Brigade ensured all residents were evacuated safely, with only minor injuries reported. This incident reignited concerns about the prevalence of flammable cladding in residential buildings across the UK.
BREAKING NEWS
Kingspan Settles in Cladding Compensation Test Case
In late 2024, cladding manufacturer Kingspan reached a settlement in a legal case that was set to test new laws extending the range of legal claims contractors can make against cladding manufacturers. Kingspan was among 11 companies facing claims totaling £70 million from Shepherd Construction, related to a high-rise residential building in Colindale, north-west London. The settlement precluded a court judgment that could have set a precedent for future claims under the updated legislation.
